ABOUT SLEEP APNEA TREATMENT

What Is Sleep Apnea Treatment?

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Sellers to find out if a custom sleep apnea appliance is the right fit for getting you back to consistent, restful sleep.

Sleep apnea is a condition where your airway partially or fully collapses during sleep, interrupting your breathing repeatedly throughout the night. Most people don’t realize it’s happening. They just know they feel tired all the time, their partner complains about snoring, or they wake up with headaches that shouldn’t be there.

CPAP machines are the most commonly prescribed treatment, but they don’t work for everyone. A lot of patients find them uncomfortable, loud, or impossible to travel with, and they stop using them. That’s where dental sleep appliances come in.

At Aesthetic Dental Center, Dr. Krysta Sellers fits patients for custom oral appliances that reposition the jaw during sleep to keep the airway open. They’re small, quiet, easy to travel with, and for many patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, just as effective as a CPAP. Dr. Sellers short-term goal for this year includes growing her sleep apnea appliance work specifically because she sees how much it improves her patients’ day-to-day lives.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Sleep Apnea Treatment

Do I need a formal sleep study before getting an appliance?
Most patients say it’s much more comfortable than a traditional cleaning. Many feel very little throughout the appointment. For anyone still nervous, nitrous oxide is available to help you relax.
A CPAP pushes pressurized air through your airway to keep it open. An oral appliance repositions your lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, which naturally keeps the airway from collapsing. Many patients find the appliance much easier to sleep with, travel with, and actually use consistently.
Medical insurance, including some Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, sometimes covers oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea. Dental insurance coverage varies. We’ll help you sort through what applies to your specific plan before anything is finalized. CareCredit is also available.
Most patients adjust within one to two weeks. The first few nights can feel different, but Dr. Sellers follows up to make sure the fit is right and make any adjustments needed to get you comfortable.
