ABOUT TOOTH EXTRACTIONS

What Is a Tooth Extraction?

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Sellers to find out if an extraction is necessary and what your options are for replacing the tooth afterward.

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It sounds straightforward, and in many cases it is. But the decision to extract and the way it’s handled matter more than most patients realize, especially when implants or other restorative work will follow.

At Aesthetic Dental Center, Dr. Krysta Sellers approaches extractions conservatively. She doesn’t recommend removing a tooth unless it’s genuinely the right call. If there’s a way to save it with a crown, a root canal, or another restorative option, that conversation happens first. When extraction is the right path, she performs it with precision, explains what to expect during recovery, and, just as importantly, talks through replacement options before you leave.

That last part is where Dr. Sellers’ prosthodontic background makes a real difference. Prosthodontics is the specialty focused on restoring and replacing teeth, so when a tooth comes out, she’s already thinking about bone preservation, implant timing, and what the long-term plan looks like. Patients don’t have to figure that out on their own after the fact.

Sedation options inlcude nitrous oxide and are available for patients who are anxious about the procedure. You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through it.

HOW WE WORK

Our Gentle Extraction Process

We believe every patient deserves a comfortable and worry-free dental experience. That’s why we follow a carefully planned extraction process designed to minimize discomfort and promote fast healing.

Consult and planning

Your visit begins with a complete dental exam and digital X-rays. This allows our dentist to evaluate the condition of your tooth, the surrounding bone, and nearby nerves. With this information, we create a customized treatment plan that ensures a safe and precise extraction.

Local Anesthesia for Maximum Comfort

Before the procedure begins, we thoroughly numb the area using advanced local anesthesia. You will remain awake, but you won’t feel pain — only slight pressure during the extraction.

Gentle Tooth Removal

Using specialized dental instruments and modern techniques, the tooth is carefully loosened and removed with minimal trauma to the surrounding tissue. Our team works efficiently to reduce procedure time and support faster healing.

Post-Treatment Care

After your extraction, we provide detailed aftercare instructions to help you heal comfortably. We will review pain management, swelling control, and diet recommendations so you know exactly what to expect during recovery.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extractions

Will the extraction hurt?

The area will be completely numbed before Dr. Sellers begins. You may feel pressure during the procedure but not pain. If you’re anxious, nitrous oxide is available to make the experience more comfortable from start to finish.

Most patients feel significantly better within two to three days. Full healing of the soft tissue takes closer to one to two weeks. Dr. Sellers will give you specific instructions based on your extraction and health history so you know exactly what to expect and what to watch for.
In most cases, yes. Leaving a gap in your smile affects more than appearance. Over time the surrounding teeth can shift, the bone beneath the socket begins to shrink, and your bite can change in ways that create new problems. Dr. Sellers will walk through your replacement options, including dental implants, bridges, and dentures, before you leave the office.
Most dental insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, cover at least a portion of extraction costs. The exact amount depends on your plan and the complexity of the procedure. We’ll review your benefits with you before scheduling so there are no surprises. CareCredit financing is also available.
